Fall is around the corner and it is a good time to look at what is actually in your medicine cabinet and on your bathroom shelf. As the seasons shift, a lot of us restock sunscreen, first aid basics and daily supplements. Why food-grade, edible ingredients matter
Skin absorbs essentially everything it comes into contact with. It is not impenetrable. It is more like a sponge, allowing absorption and desorption through the pores — absorption of hopefully good stuff, and desorption of waste by-products in the form of perspiration.
Most personal care products on the market rely on synthetic fragrances, parabens and other additives that would never be approved for food use. Some of these ingredients include toxins, defined as substances that cause cell death, including endocrine disruptors that are often female-mimicking hormones that can interfere with the body’s hormonal balance.
We formulate everything here in the USA at our own facility — no third-party production in foreign lands. Every 3rd Rock product starts from food-grade, edible ingredients and earth-derived components sourced in the USA, unless no one in the USA manufactures the substance. Gamma oryzanol comes from France and L-arginine from Japan for that reason. Nothing ever comes from China or other countries where the origin is suspect.
We are Leaping Bunny approved, which is neither simple to achieve nor something our customers should take lightly. Every single component of every single product must meet their third-party testing standards, including the COA — Certificate of Analysis — to prove that what we receive is valid and certified for our cGMP (certified good manufacturing process) facility. That means no endocrine disruptors, no aluminum, no synthetic fragrances and no parabens, and most importantly zero toxins.
Reading a label like a scientist, not just a shopper
You do not need a chemistry degree to make better choices. A few habits help:
- Look for ingredient names you recognize, or that sound like something from a kitchen rather than a lab.
